Where is Colorado’s ‘Stairway to Heaven?’
One of Colorado's many notable landmarks is a long stairway that runs straight up the side of a mountain just outside of Colorado Springs and is known as the Manitou Incline. The Incline is a popular attraction for outdoors enthusiasts as well as fitness enthusiasts and has been nicknamed "Stairway to Heaven" by many.
However, a much lesser-known attraction on Colorado's eastern plains is actually called "Stairway to Heaven" and its location may surprise you.
Where is Colorado's Stairway to Heaven?
Just east of the I-25 corridor lie Colorado's eastern plains which lack many of the characteristics that the state is known for. The land is flat, much like its neighboring states of Kansas and Nebraska, and is where the majority of Colorado's tornadoes have historically taken shape.
Right along the fairly desolate Colorado State Highway 86 is where you'll find the state's Stairway to Heaven. That is, unless you blink.
As you can see, the highway connects the towns of Castle Rock and Limon, and the aforementioned stairway is somewhere in between.
As we can see here, the landmark sits at the intersection between Highway 86 and County Road 105 with its closest neighbors being the Uh Oh Ranch and Cimmaron Dog Art.
The intersection feels like the setting for a movie about the Mississippi Delta Blues but if you look closely, you can see the stairway in the above photo.
The Stairway to Heaven consists of an old set of cement stairs and two signs - one that features an arrow pointing up to the sky and another that simply reads, "Heaven."
While it's far from one of the most remarkable attractions that the state has to offer, if you ever find yourself cruising down Highway 86 towards Limon you might as well stop for a selfie.
