However, another, lesser-known and equally quirky race takes place each summer as well but instead of something like a coffin, these races feature outhouses racing down the street.
Fairplay Colorado's Annual Outhouse Races
If someone asks you where the "real" South Park is, the easy response that doesn't require too much effort is, simply, Fairplay.
The small mountain town of Fairplay has hosted its annual Burro Days since 1949 but for the past 12 years, instead of holding a burro race like Leadville, this festival's vehicles are outhouses.
The outhouses must be built by the entrants and a number of specific rules must be followed during construction including no use of motor pedals, bicycle parts are permitted but no full bicycle structures are allowed, and each outhouse must have a roof, four sides, and a doorway.
However, what's likely the most important rule states the following:
Each outhouse must have a seat with a hole that one team member sits in during the race. Seat must be attached securely to the outhouse and the rider may hold on to some type of grasping device, which is suggested for safety reasons.
It should also be mentioned that a roll of toilet paper is required as well.
Check out the full list of rules and any further information regarding this wacky tradition by visiting the official Burro Days website.
