However, it's no secret that while it can be an incredibly fun method of travel, cruising alongside vehicles while on a motorcycle can prove to be extremely dangerous.
That being said, the state of Colorado will soon be legalizing a method of motorcycle travel that while rather common, has technically been considered illegal for some time.
Colorado to Legalize Lane Filtering for Motorcycles
If you're familiar with motorcycle culture, you're likely already familiar with the difference between two techniques used by riders when dealing with traffic - lane filtering and lane splitting.
Lane splitting is a term used to describe the way in which motorcyclists weave through traffic while vehicles are in motion and is considered to be extremely dangerous.
On the other hand, when a motorcyclist advances through gridlock traffic that is at a complete stop is something known as lane filtering.
While both of these riding methods are currently illegal in Colorado, lane filtering will soon be permitted across the Centennial State with riders' safety in mind.
The bill that was written in order to legalize lane filtering, known as Senate Bill 24-0749, will go into effect on August 7, 2024.
Legalizing lane filtering, according to proponents of the bill, will allow motorcyclists to move to the front of gridlock traffic while vehicles are at complete stops to increase the safety of riders and minimize the chance of an accident caused by vehicles in motion.
