A Colorado residential camp has decided to close for the summer following a COVID-19 outbreak that impacted 51 staffers.

According to Garfield County.net, Eagle Lake Overnight Camp received reports of confirmed cases at the camp which had some 150 staff members on site for training to get ready for the camp's opening. An investigation revealed four confirmed cases, seven probable cases, and another  40 people who were exposed. No campers had yet arrived and the camp made the decision not to open this summer. The camp is located near the border of Teller and El Paso Counties.

Meanwhile, children's day camps, residential camps, and youth sports camps in Colorado are allowed to open as of June 1, as per the governor's updated safer at home orders. However, groups of campus are limited to 25 or fewer and standard pandemic protocols are expected to be followed, including adequate social distancing.

So far in Colorado, there have been more than 30,000 confirmed cases and more than 1600 deaths. The recovery rate in the state is just over 99.5%, which is really good news. However, the virus is still alive and well in Colorado, even though our numbers and trends look better than many states across the country. Many camps are proceeding, but with caution.

Locally, Grand Junction Parks and Rec is taking registrations for summer day camps. Capacities are limited and so you are urged to get your kids registered right away.
