The Colorado Department of Revenue released the numbers following the first full month of legal sports gambling. Can you guess which "sport" has proven to be Colorado's favorite to bet on?

Just yesterday (July 13) the Colorado Department of Revenue's Division of Gaming forked over the first Sports Betting Proceeds Report for the dates May 1 through May 30, 2020. Would you like to take a wild guess as to how much Coloradans spent on sports wagers? How does the number of $25,621,761.63 sound? How much would a dollar amount like that generate in taxes? According to the press release, total taxes due equaled $96,537.55.

Okay, those are some big bucks. So, what were the most popular sports to be wagered on? Well, let's start by looking at the national average. According to the website weirdworm.com, the most popular sports when it comes to national sports betting are:

  1. Football (Soccer)
  2. Tennis
  3. Horse Racing
  4. Golf
  5. Boxing

Football, horse racing, and boxing I get. The others... not so much. Oddly, Colorado's favorite sport to bet on is not on that list. According to the report, the most popular "sport" to bet on during Colorado's first month of legalized sports betting is....... get ready...... table tennis.

Yes, that's right, I said table tennis. Unless I'm mistaken, isn't that just a fancy way of saying Ping Pong? We used to call it Ping Pong. Back when I was growing up in the 1970s, everybody had a Ping Pong table in their house. Let's make sure we're all on the same page here. Yep, according to Wikipedia:

Table tennis, also known as ping-pong and whiff-whaff, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and forth across a table using small rackets.

Okay, so the world is changing around us. Seriously, the last time I heard the words table tennis or Ping Pong was back when the movie Forrest Gump came out. I hadn't thought of it since.

Well, there you go sports fans. While the sports world is in something of a holding pattern with COVID-19, it seems, for the time being at least, Ping Pong is the current tournament of kings. I couldn't name one professional table tennis player if you put a gun to my head, so I'm not sure who I'd bet on. It seems, though, the various Colorado sportsbooks have it covered.
