What Happened to the Colorado Bears?
The story begins on September 29, 2023, when the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department discovered the remains of three black bears near the tiny town of Howard, Colorado, which is located just southeast of Salida.
The bears were described as a mother and two of her cubs, and the perpetrator had mutilated their bodies by removing their heads and claws.
Upon further investigation, officials determined that the bears were shot and discovered a red and black glove near the scene.
Who Killed and Mutilated the Colorado Bears?
The suspect in this sad and serious crime has been identified as 52-year-old Paul Stromberg. According to authorities, an acquaintance of Stromberg heard about the discovery after Stromberg told them about what he'd done and showed the acquaintance photos of the bear carcasses which show him wearing the same gloves found near the bodies.
Why Did the Colorado Man Allegedly Kill and Mutilate the Bears?
According to the acquaintance that turned Stromberg in, the man bragged about shooting the bears and watching them fall out of the tree, as well as chopping their heads and claws off.
The man said that the motivation for this crime was the fact that the bears had allegedly eaten some of his chickens and he reacted by killing the mother bear's "whole (expletive) family."
If convicted, Stromberg could face up to $13,000 in fines and six months in jail.
