CMU Student Who Passed Away From COVID Receives Honorary Degree

Cody Lyster was a 21-year-old baseball player at Colorado Mesa University. He sadly passed away in April from COVID-19 when his heart stopped while in the ICU.

The Colorado Mesa University student had always dreamed of going to college and was the first in his family to go to college, according to 9News. His family is seriously missing him, especially during the holidays. Cody would always go Black Friday shopping with his mom and loved to put up the Christmas tree together.

According to 9News, his family says that when it comes to coronavirus you can't assume anything. You can't assume that just because you're young and healthy that you'll survive it and they hope that sharing Cody's story will make people think.

Colorado Mesa University made Cody's dreams come true by giving him an honorary degree during graduation. His family was there to accept the honorary degree on his behalf at CMU's commencement ceremony last Friday.

Cody Lyster's mom says that Cody wasn't looking down during graduation 'he was right there with us.' We can't imagine what it's like to lose a loved one like this and our hearts and thoughts go out to Cody's family and friends.

Colorado Mesa University not only gave Cody an honorary degree they also established a scholarship in his name too. The Cody Lyster Memorial Scholarship helps students have the opportunity to go to college, according to 9News.
