Things Get Complicated in the First ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Teaser
That Roger Deakins, man. The dude knows how to use a movie camera.
Just look at this Blade Runner 2049 trailer, via Entertainment Weekly. It doesn’t give you much to go on in terms of story, but it does give you Deakins’ incredible cinematography. When I spoke with him last year about the project he warned me “I’m not gonna do shafts of light coming through a window with rain just for the sake of doing shafts of light and rain.” And yeah, there’s some rain in this trailer. But there’s also those amazing shots of Ryan Gosling wandering through that sandblasted world where he finds Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard.
Some 30 years after Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner gave us one of the movies’ signature versions of future Los Angeles, the franchise returns, this time in the hands of Denis Villeneuve, the director of Sicaro and this year’s terrific sci-fi movie Arrival. With him and Deakins in charge, you couldn’t ask for a better team to live up to the original Blade Runner’s visuals. We’ll just have to wait and see if the stories holds up its end of the bargain. Via EW, here’s a plot synopsis:
Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
Well I guess he finds him. Cause they, like, have a conversation in the trailer. Spoiler alert, dude. Blade Runner 2049 opens on October 6, 2017.
