Black Bears in Colorado to Begin Joyous Binge Eating Season
Earlier this week I saw some comments go up on social media from residents of the Palisade, Colorado area. They were talking about seeing a few bears in their yards late at night.
Have you seen any activity recently? Most of these comments I read just days ago indicated the sightings took place near or after midnight. If I saw a bear in my yard at 2 am, I would probably not be very quick on the draw with my camera either. However, I'm sure plenty of listeners have got some photos of close encounters.
You May See An Increase in Bear Sightings in Urban Areas
Hyperphagia is a term that basically means extreme hunger. Even when a bear eats and drinks all day, the hunger just continues. This is to ensure they are fat enough to survive the winter. This also means they smell your cookout and might just be hungry enough to wander into the yard if nobody is around.
It's the time of year when we start to see bears edge a little closer to "urban areas" because they are about to start binge eating to prepare for the colder months down the road. When I saw the comments go up on social media about possible bears in Palisade, this was the first thing that came to mind. It's eating season.
