Police in Cortez, Colorado, are searching for a 16-year-old boy missing since last Friday, April 6.

Police began searching for William Gallegos, 16, Friday evening. While authorities don't believe he is in danger, they say attempts to contact family and friends have been unsuccessful.

According to The Journal, Police Sgt. Rex Brinkerhoff said William's mother, Ashley Gallegos Crawford, believed her son was planning to stay with relatives. Police have been unable to confirm if William ever reached those family members.

The Journal posted the story of William's disappearance on their Facebook page on Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. Some in the community are confused as to why it took so long for word to get out about this missing person.

Others are using social media to ask people to step up and spread the word.
