An updated modeling report released by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the Colorado School of Public Health estimates that one out of every 49 Coloradans is currently infected with the novel coronavirus.

"It's rather shocking" Gov. Jared Polis said in a press conference on Friday (Nov. 20).

The spread of COVID-19 has reached new heights since the start of the pandemic in March; In Weld County, there are no vacant non-ICU beds, and only 3 ICU beds are available. Meanwhile, Weld County officials say that they will not enforce the Level Red COVID-19 restrictions that took effect Sunday (Nov. 22) at 5 p.m.

Weld County and Larimer County are moving to Level Red restrictions, which include:

  • no indoor dining
  • gyms reduce to 10% capacity
  • offices reduce to 10% capacity, with remote work strongly encouraged

As of Sunday (Nov. 23), there have been 189,285 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 12,484 hospitalizations across the state since the beginning of the pandemic in March.

There are currently 1,539 patients hospitalized across Colorado with COVID-19, and with the holiday season among us, that number is expected to continue to rise.

“Concern remains that we could exceed ICU capacity if people increase their contact with others during the next few weeks over the Thanksgiving holiday and beyond,” said Jonathan Samet, MD, MS, dean of the Colorado School of Public Health. “This is not the year to celebrate with extended family or friends—stick close to home and spend the holiday with those in your own household.”
