The Grand Junction Kiwanis Club is spearheading an effort to try and get a new handicap accessible playground  for Fruitvale Elementary School and is asking for the community's help.

According to a report on Western Slope Now, there are 14 students at Fruitvale Elementary that are unable to use the play area because of the lack of handicap accessibility.

The Grand Junction Kiwanis Club has entered the school into a Facebook contest for a $25,000 grant. The winner is determined by the number of votes received. You can vote for Fruitvale Elementary via the Kiwanis Facebook Page.

The contest is sponsored by Kiwanis International in conjunction with Landscape Structures. The 10 schools with the highest number of votes by noon on Friday will be finalists and then a panel of judges will select the winner to receive $25,000 in playground equipment.

Grand Junction Kiwanis President Stuart Cruikshank went on the air today at the Townsquare Media studios asking the public to please get on line at vote for Fruitvale.

The contest ends on Friday, May 27, so it's imperative that people get on line and vote right away. Let's all vote and help these kids get some new playground equipment that will be accessible to all children.
