Who Belongs on Colorado’s Mount Rushmore?

South Dakota is the only state in the country with a Mount Rushmore, but we thought Colorado should have its own. Here’s is who I think should be featured. In my hypothetical scenario, Western Colorado is the perfect place for the Colorado Mount Rushmore. What do you think about Mt. Garfield, the Bookcliffs, maybe even the Grand Mesa?

Since this is pure fantasy, I’m going with Mt. Garfield, in full view of all Interstate 70 travelers, it’s the perfect location.

The thought process here is people who either came from Colorado or who have made a significant impact on Colorado history. For me, John Elway and John Denver are no-brainers, but the other two are certainly up for discussion. So cast your vote below or write in your candidate for our Colorado Mount Rushmore.

John Elway

The Denver Broncos did not know what it was like to win a Super Bowl until John Elway led them to back-to-back titles in the late 90s. As if that weren’t enough, the hall-of-fame quarterback returned to Denver as Vice President and General Manager of the Broncos. This helped get them to two more big games and winning Super Bowl 50. Not that he’s planning on it, but Elway could run for governor and it would be no contest.

Tim Allen

A Denver native, Tim Allen won our hearts on his long-running series “Home Improvement.” We loved him as Santa Clause,¬†three times. And if that wasn’t enough, along came cartoon hero Buzz Lightyear in the “Toy Story” series. He’s made us laugh and he’s made us cry, and he’s earned a spot on Colorado’s special mountain.

John Denver

He lived in Colorado and sang about Colorado. He gave us all a greater appreciation and respect for nature and the wondrous beauty of our state. With over 33 million albums sold and more than 300 songs recorded and released, John Denver is legendary not only in Colorado¬†but across around the world. We’ll be forever grateful for “Rocky Mountain High.”

Jack Dempsey

He was known as the “Manassa Mauler” from the tiny town of Manassa, Colorado, just south of Alamosa. One of boxings’ most popular and greatest fighters ever. Dempsey was the heavyweight champion of the world from 1919 to1926. With 54 wins, 45 by knockout and six losses, Dempsey is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
