What’s Next For Tim Tebow?

The tumultuous NFL career of former Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow may be over. Today, the New York Jets, released Tebow, leaving them with five quarterbacks on their roster including second round draft pick,  West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. For a team that traded a draft pick  to the Broncos to acquire Tebow, the Jets never looked like a Tebow that wanted him in the first place. Most NFL analysts and experts were quite surprised when the Denver Broncos drafted University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow with the 25th overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft. Even though Tebow had enjoyed a most incredible college football career which included a Heisman Trophy and a national championship, there was plenty of doubt about whether or not he had what it takes to be an NFL quarterback. But, then Broncos coach Josh McDaniels rolled the dice and took a chance on Tebow, who had not been expected to be drafted until at least the 2nd or third round.

For a while it looked like maybe McDaniels was a genius. In Tebow's second season, in his completely unconventional style  he took a 1-4 team, led them to a division title, and a playoff win over the heavily favored Pittsburgh Steelers. But, then came the highly publicized pursuit of quarterback Peyton Manning, and Tebow was subsequently traded to the New  York Jets.

Initially, it  looked like the Jets wanted Tebow - maybe not to be their starting quarterback , but at least as a back  up, and a go-to guy for special plays. Well, there weren't many of those. In 12 games, Tebow completed 6 of 8 passes for 39 yards, and ran the ball 32 times for 102 yards. For your information that's roughly 3 plays a game.

And then when starting quarterback Mark Sanchez was injured late in the season, it wasn't Tebow that got the start, it was a little known rookie named Greg McElroy who got the nod.  And even though Sanchez had struggled mightily all-season and there were the familiar chants in the stands "Te-bow!, Te-bow!", Tim never got the chance to try and do what he did in Denver - energize and emotionalize an average team and lift them to a level a little bit above themselves to accomplish great things.

And, now, just two days after the conclusion of the NFL draft, and when NFL teams have drafted quarterbacks, and signed another 21 free agent quaraterbacks,  Tebow finds himself without a job, and without a team. Will another NFL team take a chance on him? Will Tebow, perhaps, find redemption in the Canadian Football League? Is his football-playing career finished? Only God knows the answer to those questions, which is why it's a good thing that Tebow  places his faith and trust in Him.

I have to admit, like many others who know a whole lot more about football than I do,  I have always been skeptical of Tebow's ability to be a starting quarterback in the NFL However,  my respect and admiration for his work ethic, his athletic ability,  his moral character, and unwavering  faith have always been high - and remain high.

As a human being, Tim Tebow deserves better than what he got from the New York Jets - and for that matter the Denver Broncos. As a football player, he knows above all else that football is a business. Sometimes that business is handled professionally, and  decently, and sometimes it isn't.

Tim Tebow's football career may or may not be over, but regardless, we have not heard the last of this young man. If his football career is in fact, finished, he has bigger fish to fry and greater things to accomplish.  Tim has done all the right things. He's said all the right things. You reap what you sow, and the best is yet to come for Tim Tebow. The same probably can't be said for the New York Jets.
