With the economy improving 2017 is looking to be a record-setting year for Halloween sales.

Nationwide sales for costumes, decorations, and accessories are already ahead of last year at this time. The National Retail Federation is predicting this year to be record-setting with an estimated $9.1 billion spent on Halloween.

Have you decided on your costume? I'm not a big "dresser-upper" but with the party at The Avalon Theater and the screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, I may be forced into it. However, I'm fairly certain I can't pull off the thigh highs and drag get-up.

Grand Junction's local custom shop, Mad Margaret's reports that sales are up but not necessarily on outfits. Many customers are coming in for accessories and making their own costumes. That place is nuts. I've lived and worked in several different markets and not seen a shop quite like it. They have everything.

What's the hot costume for 2017? No, it's not The Donald. It appears the more traditional stuff is what everyone's going with this year. According to USA Today:

Most popular costumes for children:

1. Action/Superhero
2. Batman character
3. Princess
4. Animal (cat, dog, monkey)
5. Star Wars character

Most popular costumes for adults:

1. Witch
2. Batman character (Batman, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, etc.)
3. Animal (cat, dog, etc.)
4. Pirate
5. Marvel Superhero (Spider-Man, Captain America, etc.)
