UPDATE 4.19.18 @ 3:36 p.m.: Excel Energy has confirmed power is out for ~2,100 people in Fruita and the Redlands as a precaution to the Skipper Island wildfire.

UPDATE 4.19.18 @ 2:28 p.m.: Interstate 70 has been shut down in both directions near mile marker 18 due to the Skipper Island Fire jumping the interstate.

According to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, a wildfire south of I-70 has burned 12 acres, and as of Thursday morning, is 0% contained.

The fire at Skipper Island in the Horsethief Canyon State Wildlife Area just north of the Colorado River was reported around 7:00 Wednesday night (April 18).

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office reports agencies including the Lower Valley Fire Protection District, the MCSO Wildland Team, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife were pulled from the area at 11 p.m. due to unsafe conditions.

As of 10:44 a.m. on Thursday, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning effective through 9 p.m. Wind conditions are currently at 10 to 15 MPH and are expected to reach 25 MPH later today.

Currently, no homes or structures are at risk.
