Remembering Grand Junction: Horse Racing at Uranium Downs
Get ready for the return of horse racing in Grand Junction! Heading to the track to see the races used to be a common occurrence in Western Colorado. That has faded away. Get set for racing’s return by traveling back in time a few decades to the days of races at Uranium Downs with these Bob Grant photos.
If you lived in Western Colorado in the 1970s and 80s, you probably went to Uranium Downs every Saturday for the races. Bets were $2.00 back then. My grandfather, Bob Grant was there every week.
If you were there, you’ll probably recognize scenes like those in the Robert Grant photos above. If you weren’t able to attend, here’s a look at what you missed.
Horse racing will return to Western Colorado for one night. Granted, this is a slightly different spin on the event. Proceeds from “A Night at the Races” will assist the Grand Valley Equine Assisted Learning Center to bring healing to the Western Colorado via their work with horses.
