A major road construction project gets underway in Grand Junction.

A major road construction project got started today. 7th Street is one of the busiest in town and if it's on your daily commute, you may want to consider an alternative route. The normally 5 lane road will be reduced to just 2 until mid-August.

Since the project is close to the radio station, I drove over to check out the situation. At just after 5 pm, north boud traffic was backed up for blocks. Eastbound Orchard traffic was backed up for a couple blocks too as the normal 2 lane intersection was down to just a single way through.

Apparently, the project has been in the works for years. Construction crews will be smoothing out the road, replacing the curb, and Excel Energy will be installing new gas lines. The construction is part of a voter-approved project from the April 2017 election.

So this summer the City of Grand Junction is asking you to avoid the area if at all possible. If today is any indication, driving around the construction will definitely be faster than trying to work your way through it.
