Star Trek, the original series, celebrates it's 50th birthday this Thursday, September 8. How will Grand Junction peeps celebrate?

I have to say it - I'm a little disappointed Grand Junction. I was hoping for a parade, the Governor, and maybe the dedication of a Star Trek statue on Main Street. As it turns out, most people in this town are oblivious to this monumental event.

My mom, born and raised in Grand Junction, a lifelong Trekkie, has big plans for the 50th anniversary. I thought most people would have major celebrations planned, too.

Personally, the 50th anniversary of the debut of Star Trek is one of the biggest events of my life. When I come to work tomorrow, you can bet I'll be wearing my Star Trek Leonard Nimoy tribute shirt. It is going to be a great day. Here's the rundown for my Thursday evening.

First things first - I have a rehearsal with the Western Colorado Jazz Orchestra on Thursday night. Once that's over... THE PARTY WILL COMMENCE.

My plans involve:

  • (1) $3 bottle of wine
  • (1) comfy chair
  • (1) Star Trek Mr. Spock T-shirt
  • (1) Television
  • (1) DVD player
  • (1) furry little dog at my side
  • The following episodes of Star Trek:
    • The Man Trap (the first episode to air - September 8, 1966)
    • Space Seed (the episode which introduced Khan)
    • and the movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

I won't even get home from rehearsal until after 10 p.m., so it's going to be a late night. Don't be surprised if I'm late for my air shift on Friday morning (note to the boss).

Seriously, this is a major event. Think back on the contributions Star Trek has made over the last 50 years. If you're a fan, then you already know what we're talking about. If Star Trek isn't really your cup of tea, please take a moment and watch one episode.

If you want to travel back in time, watch the episode "The Man Trap." It wasn't the first episode made, but it was the first to air... 50 years ago this Thursday.

Be a part of history, and break out your party hats for the 50th anniversary of Star Trek. The adventure continues this Thursday, September 8, 2016.
