Slayer Crush Port Chester With Testament and Carcass

Don't let the smile on Slayer frontman Tom Araya's face fool you. The iconic band brought power and intensity to the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y., on Wednesday, March 2, with help from Testament and Carcass. It was a night of legendary heavy metal from start to finish.

Loudwire had the opportunity to interview Araya before the show, and he's super friendly and easygoing offstage, but once the show starts, he gets down to business as his powerful screams soar over the monstrous riffs emanating from the guitars of Kerry King and Gary Holt. Add in the robust drumming from Paul Bostaph and you've got a metal locomotive that can't be stopped.

Playing in front of a striking backdrop featuring the illuminated artwork from the band's latest album, Repentless, Slayer kicked off the show with the disc's title track and showcased the new album throughout the night with songs like "You Against You," "When the Stillness Comes," "Take Control" and others. Of course, Slayer also peppered the 22-song set with classics like "War Ensemble," "Raining Blood" and the set-closer "Angel of Death." The sold-out crowd soaked it all in with undying adulation until the very last notes.

Prior to Slayer's set, fellow thrash legends Testament took the stage for an explosive set of their own. Frontman Chuck Billy played air guitar on his mic stick as Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson shredded their respective axes. The whole band showed great energy, with bassist Steve DiGiorgio firing up the crowd throughout the show, and the "Atomic Clock" himself, Gene Hoglan, providing the bone-crushing beat.

Opening up the night were UK death metal veterans Carcass, and the venue was already packed when they took the stage. Frontman Jeff Walker's ear-shattering vocals and the band's overall intensity provided a fitting beginning to a night of metal mastery.
