Residents Near Steamboat Springs Prepare to Flee Deep Creek Fire
The Routt County Sheriff’s Office paid a visit to roughly 30 homes yesterday, preparing residents to vacate the area. The Deep Creek Fire, burning northwest of Steamboat Springs, expanded rapidly yesterday from two acres to 419 acres.
This fire, which authorities believe to be the result of lightning strikes, was discovered around noon yesterday between Milner and Hayden. As of today, the Aspen Times reports the Deep Creek Fire has consumed 2,089 acres.
According to authorities, the mixture of the wind, terrain, and arid conditions have fueled the fire. Firefighters from several communities including Steamboat Springs, Oak Creek, and Hayden were on the scene by Monday afternoon.
