Here's a way many people didn't want to start 2017, with the flu. Unfortunately, reports of the flu both in Mesa County and around Colorado have increased this month.

The latest statistics from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, show 11 new cases of influenza requiring hospitalization between January 15 and 21, 2017 and a total of 38 reported cases in Mesa County since October 22, 2016.

Statewide, there have been 842 patients admitted to hospitals with the flu since October 2016.

Statistics for other nearby counties reporting individuals with influenza requiring hospitalization the week ending January 21 compared to the season:

  • Delta County - 2 of 5 cases total
  • Montrose County - 1 of 3 cases total
  • Garfield County - 2 of 12 cases total

The Mesa County Health Department says for the week ending January 21, the percentage of clinic visits with people reporting flu-like symptoms is the highest of the season, so far.

With the increase in reports, health officials recommend those who have not received the influenza vaccination do so now as the risk of getting the flu will continue for awhile.
