For all its tremendous success, Marvel will take a massive chance this summer in introducing audiences to the 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' but with no knowledge of how a sequel could figure into Phase 3, might the comic studio look to extend the franchise with an animated series to join others on Disney XD?

According to one report from Comic Book Movie, Marvel has been quietly assembling an animated incarnation of the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' to accompany its 2014 theatrical release, likely one that more closely follows the tone of the film, just as current Disney XD cartoon 'Avengers Assemble' replaced 'Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes' with the same goal. The report also lists another animated Spider-Man series to have been under consideration, before the studio settled on the Guardians.

Details are scarce of course, as date, network, and the report itself remain unconfirmed, though it's worth noting that Marvel seemingly tested the waters for an animated 'Guardians of the Galaxy' by including the team in a 2013 episode of 'Ultimate Spider- Man,' wherein the late Michael Clarke Duncan voiced Groot. There, the team consisted of its film line-up of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Racoon and Groot, while an earlier 'Earth's Mightiest Heroes' appearance consisted of Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Quasar, and Adam Warlock.

Marvel has undoubtedly begun ramping up the team's exposure, especially with the most recent photo release from James Gunn's upcoming film, but what do you think? Would a 'Guardians of the Galaxy' TV series keep the fires burning after the film's 2014 release?
