With hot dry weather expected to continue across Colorado, both the chance of a fire and fires being reported to have increased significantly.

While you can't control nature fires, human-caused fires can be avoided by using some common sense. National Geographic offers these tips:

  • Never leave a campfire unattended. Make sure your fire is completely out by pouring water on it and stirring the ashes. Repeat until all ashes and embers are cold.
  • Fuel operated lanterns, stoves, and heaters deserve extra attention. Refuel only after they are cool and avoid fuel spills. Keep extra fuel, regardless of type, away from these appliances.
  • Don't throw cigarettes or matches out the window or on the ground. Make sure they are completely extinguished before properly discarding them.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Also, report any unattended campfires or out-of-control fires to 911, the fire department, Colorado Parks and Wildlife or National Forest Service.
