Linkin Park Break Record with 23 Tracks on Billboard ‘Hot Rock Songs’ Chart

It’s not unusual for artists to get a bump on the charts when a band member dies. In the case of Linkin Park, whose frontman Chester Bennington died by suicide last month (July 20), the band is experiencing an unprecedented rise in music sales.

According to Billboard, Linkin Park has a staggering 23 titles on the Hot Rock Songs chart for the week dated Aug. 12. That’s an even bigger showing than David Bowie had following his unexpected passing in January 2016.

Linkin Park have also become the first artist to have claimed the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 slots on the Top Rock Albums chart. Their latest release One More Light is back in the top spot for a second week, rising 122 percent to 50,000 equivalent album units (32,000 of which are pure sales), according to Nielsen Music. 2000’s Hybrid Theory (41,000 units, up 177 percent) is No. 2 and 2003’s Meteora (33,000, up 203 percent) is at No. 3.

On the Hot Rock Songs chart, it’s the 2001 track “Numb” at No. 1, and seven of the Top 10 are hits that cover the band’s entire discography, beginning with Hybrid Theory through this year’s One More Light.

Over the weekend, a private funeral service was held for Bennington in Palos Verdes, Calif., with over 500 family members and friends attending the ceremony, which was led by local KROQ DJ Ted Stryker. Among those in attendance were Bennington’s Stone Temple Pilots bandmates Robert and Dean DeLeo, his Kings of Chaos bandmate Matt Sorum as well as Damon Fox and Jimmy Gnecco, who performed “Amazing Grace.” Dead by Sunrise’s Ryan Shuck and Bennington’s Linkin Park bandmates Mike Shinoda and Joe Hahn were among those delivering eulogies.

There were also more than 300 fan gatherings scheduled around the world which were officially endorsed by Linkin Park.
