The Denver Broncos don't know who their starting quarterback is - which is either the very best, or absolutely the worst news Broncos fans could hear this week.

Denver Head Coach Gary Kubiak says he isn't even close to naming a starting quarterback and the first depth chart released by the team shows Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian as co- number one quarterbacks. What exactly does that mean?

It could mean that both quarterbacks have looked so good in off-season workouts and in training camp that it's impossible to decide which one is playing better. If this is the case, then we have nothing to worry about. We will go to the Super Bowl either way.

However, with no clear-cut favorite to win the starting job, it may be a sign  that both have been so completely mediocre that choosing a starting quarterback could be a case of choosing the lesser of two evils. Under this scenario, it could be a long and terribly disappointing season for everyone in Bronco Country.

Our first glimpse of our co-number one quarterbacks comes Thursday night when the Broncos play Chicago at Soldier Field in their first pre-season game of the year.

Whatever fans may see from Sanchez and Siemian, I would caution fans to not get to excited either way. It's just one game and it's doubtful that either guy will get much of a true test against a number one defense. That will further muddy the waters Kubiak is trying to wade through in his efforts to find a replacement for future-hall-of-famer Peyton Manning.

The longer it takes Kubiak to name a starting quarterback the more likely it is the Broncos quarterback situation is as bleak as when John Elway retired and the Broncos fortunes were in the hands of quarterbacks Brian Griese and Gus Frerotte.

UPDATE: On Tuesday afternoon Head Coach Gary Kubiak announced that Mark Sanchez would start Thursday's game against Chicago. Sanchez, he said, will play the first quarter, Trevor Siemian will play the second quarter, and rookie Paxton Lynch will play the second half.
