An iconic downtown Denver restaurant is closing after 45 years.

According to 9 News, the Old Spaghetti will be closing its doors on September 16 because their lease on the building is expiring and they weren't able to reach a new agreement.

While  The Old Spaghetti Factory opened a location in Westminster last year, it is possible this restaurant could pop up in a new location somewhere in the Denver area, but would it be the same.

The Old Spaghetti Factory is currently housed in a historic 1889 Denver City Cable Railway building that resides on the National Register of Historic Places. That makes for a pretty cool atmosphere which may be hard to duplicate.

The last time I visited the Old Spaghetti Factory was a couple of years ago, and if I'm being honest, as far as the spaghetti goes,  to quote Jim Carrey's character Fletcher Reede in the movie Liar, Liar, "I've had better."  That's disappointing and a little hard to understand, but it actually seems pretty typical.

I'm thinking of a couple of other iconic Denver restaurants who were big on atmosphere, but fell short in delivering high-quality food. I'm talking about the now-defunct pizza place, The Organ Grinder, which featured a highly entertaining, massive organ, and the ever-popular Casa Bonita, which is still one of my favorite places to visit.

Still, the Spaghetti Factory was a cool place to go and I feel a little bit of sadness that it's going away. I think I'm going home tonight to drown my sorrow in a plate full of spaghetti.
