I guess maybe it's just me, but I think the last thing I would worry about when looking for a state to buy a home in is how many clowns, spiders, and volcanoes were in that state. Turns out some people worry about that stuff, so the fine folks at the real estate search site Estately have made a list of the scariest states in the U.S.

The site used 15 common fears, and how often they occur in each state, as criteria...

  1. Bears
  2. Clowns
  3. Prison
  4. Flying
  5. Hurricanes
  6. Shark Attacks
  7. Spiders
  8. Snakes
  9. Dentists
  10. Tornadoes
  11. Meth Labs
  12. Lightning
  13. Volcanoes
  14. Murderers

Then they ranked each state from 1-50 from most scary to least scary.

The scariest? That would be Florida. The least scary? South Dakota. That means that our state, Colorado, falls in the middle somewhere, right?

Well, actually we are one of the scariest states at number 12. Tied for the scariest state when it comes to heights, and in the top 10 in clowns and flying. It's a good thing we were tied for the least scary when it comes to hurricanes and shark attacks, so that brought the average down. The site summed up our scariness like this:

If you don’t like being high then Colorado is not a state for you.

... In more ways than one!
