Sober Grad, the annual graduation party alternative in Grand Junction, is coming to an end after 15 years of parties.

The decision to dissolve Sober Grad, Inc was announced in a release from the Sober Grad Nite board, but no reason for the dissolution was given.

The annual party sponsored by Taco Bell and Pepsi has seen more than 13,000 graduating seniors and their guests come through the doors since May of 1999. The release indicates that the money remaining in their budget, donated by Taco Bell and Pepsi, will be distributed among three local non-profits that work with youth including CASA,  The House, and Partners.

KOOL 107.9 has long been a promoting partner of this event, and we're sad to see it end. It's been a great event, and what a fantastic way for graduates to celebrate safely.  Each year, attendees have eaten to their heart's content, played games, and had the chance to win some great prizes including significant cash amounts.

We're not sure if something like this will ever get started up again, but we would certainly echo the sentiments of the board in expressing great thanks to all of those who have been involved in Sober Grad for so many years, from the volunteers to the corporate and local sponsors. We'll never know how many lives might have been saved because these kids were given a safe and fun alternative to celebrating their graduation and their launch into the adult world.
