Grand Junction Police Dog Now Has His Own Armor

The canine of the Grand Junction Police Department is an important and valuable part of local law enforcement. Now, like his human counterparts, police dog Nero has his own protective armor.

Grand Junction Police Department K9 Nero was able to get the bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a donation from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The Colorado Police Canine Association also held a fundraiser to cover part of the cost.

The vests, which have to be custom made for each dog, can cost anywhere from $1,700 to over $2,200.

Nero's vest, in addition to being protective gear, has a special meaning because it's embroidered with the words "In loving memory of K9 Gero, EOW 5/6/04”. Gero was a Grand Junction K9 killed in the line of duty in 2004.

Grand Junction Police Officer, and Nero's partner and handler, Trevor Hawkins says,

“Not only is he an invaluable tool for the Grand Junction Police Department, but he’s also a member of our family.  We know first hand how important this protective gear is.”

Nero is one of approximately 30,000 dogs working with law enforcement agencies in the US.
