Fire crews have the Gibbler Gulch fire, south of Whitewater off of Highway 141, 25% contained.

The fire was reported yesterday (July 27 )about 3:45 p.m. by a resident who lives across the street. The early notification of the fire helped crews get to the fire quickly, but dry fuels lead to the fire spreading.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office Wildland team, the Bureau of Land Management and the Lands End Fire Protection district are looking for hot spots and removing any smoldering trees to prevent a flare up.

It will be at least another day before the fire crews have the area all cleared up.

Containment of the fire from air and ground crews, along with the terrain, helped keep the fire from jumping Highway 141 and reaching area homes. However, several power poles were burned knocking out power to homes in the area.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
