America may be the land of opportunity, but it sure isn’t the land of smiles.

A new Conde Nast Traveler survey of 46,000 people helped create a list of the friendliest and unfriendliest cities in the world. The US placed five among the unfriendliest, with Newark, New Jersey doing its part to help the state's image by finishing number one, ahead of runner-up Islamabad, Pakistan and third-place rep Oakland, California.

Sadly, the US could only place one town in the top 10 among friendliest cities -- Charleston, South Carolina, which led the friendliest cities in America and finished fifth in the world.

The friendliest city in the world is Florianopolis, Brazil, which you’re probably too busy cursing out a stranger who asked for directions to realize you’ve never heard of.
