NASA endured a massive failure on Tuesday.

An unmanned Antares rocket, intended to deliver supplies to the International Space Station, exploded seconds after launch from Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

Luckily no one was hurt, but it's an unsettling reminder of just how dangerous and unpredictable rocket science can be.

NASA issued a statement describing the event as a "mishap" and an "anomaly."

That seems like a pretty gentle way to describe expensive, catastrophic rocket explosion.
