Rob Konrad, an NFL fullback who played for the Miami Dolphins from 1999 to 2004, has an incredible story of survival.

Last week while on a fishing excursion about 9 miles from land, he was reeling in a fish when a large wave hit, knocking him into the water in the Atlantic Ocean off Florida's east coast. His boat was on autopilot and quickly drifted away, ESPN and The Associated Press reported.

So, Konrad had no other option than to start swimming -- all the way to Palm Beach, Fla. It took about 16 hours, but he washed up on shore about 4:30 a.m. the next morning.

The U.S. Coast Guard estimated that Konrad covered about 27 miles in his swim to shore. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated for hypothermia and dehydration.

Konrad said Monday that the only thing that kept him going during his 16-hour ordeal was the thought of his daughters.
