Five 70’s Supermodels: Then and Now
For many of us, the 1970's hold so many fond memories. On television we were introduced to The Waltons, Happy Days, M*A*S*H, and The Price Is Right. The 70s brought us Star Wars, Grease, and Rocky, and on the radio we were listening to the sounds of Saturday Night Fever with the Bee Gees, along with John Denver, the Carpenters, and the Eagles. Pet rocks were all the rage, as were CB radios and bell bottoms. The 70's also introduced us to five lovelies who became icons and forever- young fixtures in our 70's memories. Here is a look at these five supermodels - then and now.
Cheryl Tiegs was born September 27, 1947. As a teenager, she was cast in a handful of television commercials and the exposure landed her on the cover of Glamour magazine in 1964. Tiegs' eventually scored photo shoots with high profile magazines like Vogue and Elle. However, it was the 1978 swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated that led to her contract with Cover Girl.
In recent years, Tiegs served as a judge on the 2009 reality show True Beauty. She returned to reality TV in 2012 as a competitor on The Celebrity Apprentice. An active environmentalist, Tiegs is on the board of the Earth Conservation Corps.
Christie Brinkley was born on February 2, 1954. She adorned three consecutive Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition covers and endorsed a number of products including Cover Girl cosmetics. She had a brief appearance as Chevy Chase’s dream girl in National Lampoon's Vacation (1983). She also appeared in a video for then-husband Billy Joel’s pop hit "Uptown Girl."
Her major projects in the 1990s included a short-lived talk show on CNN. On Broadway, she reprised her role of Roxie Hart in the hit musical Chicago for several weeks in April 2012. Now in her 50s, Brinkley continues to model.
Kim Basinger was born December 8, 1953. She appeared in TV commercials as a Breck girl and was a top model before making her feature film debut in Hard Country. Lynda Carter was born on July 24, 1951. She was crowned Miss USA in 1973. Shortly afterward, Hollywood came knocking. But it was her role as Wonder Woman in 1975 that catapulted her to super-model stardom.n 1978 Carter was voted "The Most Beautiful Woman in the World" by The International Academy of Beauty and The British Press Organization.
After Wonder Woman, Carter appeared live in Las Vegas and continues to make guest appearances on television.
Susan Anton was born October 12, 1950. An actress and a singer, she first experienced fame as second runner-up in the 1969 Miss America Pageant. By the mid-1970s, Anton developed a following for her provocative Muriel Cigar commercials. She was frequently seen and heard in television, print and radio ads for the Perfect Sleeper mattress by Serta. She had a recurring role on the TV series Baywatch from 1992 to 1994.
Anton was involved in a much publicized relationship with English film and TV star Dudley Moore in the early 1980s, with much being made of their height difference: Moore being 5 feet 2.5 inches and Anton 5 feet 11. She currently resides in Las Vegas.
