Two people from Grand Junction who were killed when their car crashed into an irrigation canal on 25 Road had consumed alcohol prior to the accident.

A report from the Mesa County Coroner's Office said both 26-year-old Micah Schmidt and 25-year-old Sarah Collison had a blood alcohol content multiple times over the legal limit.

The official cause of death for both victims was listed as accidental drowning. A dog who was also in the vehicle died as a result of the accident.

Law enforcement say the report of a car in the canal came in around 8:20 p.m. on Friday (June 24). When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they found both Schmidt, the driver of the vehicle, and Collison dead.

Law enforcement are continuing their investigation an effort determine if speed or drugs may also have been contributing factors in the accident.
