Colorado residents are being warned to be on the lookout for tech support computer scam calls.

Colorado's Attorney General Cynthia Coffman has issued the warning in light of recent reports of attempted fraud in Colorado.

Coffman says when the call happens the caller ID on your phone may say "Colorado Government." But, she says it is absolutely not someone calling from state government.

The caller offers to help remove a computer virus inviting you to visit a particular website or call a number for assistance. The aim of the scam in simply to gain access to your computer, and in the process gain knowledge of your personal information.

The attorney general's office offers these tips to help you avoid being taken by a tech support scam like this.

  • Realize that nobody on the outside knows if your computer is affected by a virus
  • Legitimate companies will not call you or send a pop-up message to notify you of a virus
  • If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately, or delete the pop-up message without clicking on it
  • You should never allow or provide a stranger with remote access to your computer
  • Keep security software on your computer up to date

If you think you have been a victim of this type of fraud you can file a complaint on line. You can also call the attorney general's office directly at 1-800-222-4444, and understand they will not call you from that number.
