Listen to Chris Cornell’s Soulful Cover of ‘Stay With Me Baby’ for HBO's ‘Vinyl’

Chris Cornell delivers a cover of “Stay With Me Baby” for the soundtrack for Vinyl.

This Sunday (April 17), the Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger-produced HBO drama centered around the trials and excess of the ‘70s record industry will conclude its first season, and it’s curated an expansive soundtrack that includes up to 30 songs per episode with contributions from the likes of Julian Casablancas, Iggy Pop, Dan Auerbach's the Arcs and more. The show’s music supervisors have previously unloaded weekly EPs featuring songs from each episode, but with the finale on the horizon, they have now compiled a full-length soundtrack including Cornell’s soaring, soulful rendition of “Stay With Me Baby.” The song was first performed by Lorraine Ellison in 1966, but the Soundgarden frontman channels the raw emotional intensity of Terry Reid’s version with each explosive note. “I was very honored to be asked to record a version of ‘Stay With Me Baby’ for Vinyl," Cornell told Vulture. “I get to pay tribute to Terry Reid, whose version of the song has been a favorite of mine for many years, and be included on a great soundtrack with an amazing group of artists.”

Vinyl: Music From the HBO Original Series – The Essentials: Best of Season 1 is out today via Atlantic/Warner Bros; you can stream it below. The 17-track soundtrack also encompasses songs from Casablancas (yet another Velvet Underground cover), Elvis Costello, Charli XCX, John Doe and Royal Blood.
