The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recommended Americans who have had airbags replaced in the last 3 years to get new ones. Thanks to the Chinese forgeries are in an estimated 250,000 vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced the problemand are unaware of exactly how many vehicles may be affected. Actual car dealerships who have replaced airbags should have used genuine parts. The issue is with service centers that are not dealerships. Americans who are concerned are encouraged to have them replaced at their own expense.

The counterfeit airbags are hard to tell apart from the real thing with the same logos and brands of 'major automakers' on them. The fake airbags from China have showed consistent malfunctions in  NHTSA testing including airbags that didn't deploy and even some metal shrapnel shooting itself throughout the crashed vehicle.

Not deaths have been attributed to the fake airbags(not yet anyway). What ruins your day even more than a car crash? A car crash where metal shrapnel fires itself at you from the steering wheel.

non-deployment of the air bag to the expulsion of metal shrapnel during deployment. NHTSA is not aware of any deaths or injuries connected to counterfeit air bags.
