The Jordan family adopted several family members from Grand Junction's Roice-Hurst Humane Society, going back as far as the late 1970's. October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, and what better way to celebrate than to look back on close to 40 years of the fur-babies we adopted from the shelter.

The very first pet we adopted from Roice-Hurst Humane Society was back in 1978. We adopted Yeti, the world's best lap dog with the world's biggest feet (hence the name).

Other adoptions quickly followed: Trouble and Bambi joined the Jordan clan in 1979. Several other dogs joined the family in the upcoming years, but in their cases, they did not come from the shelter. We had several pets who came to us as strays.

In addition to the dogs we adopted for our household, I adopted two dogs from Roice-Hurst for my grandparents. Buddy was adopted in 2006, and Nana in 2008. My dog, Fluffy, was adopted in 2009.

I can honestly tell you there is nothing like a shelter pet. They are the best friends you'll ever have. As a matter of fact, it is hard to imagine anything better than adopting a shelter pet. Do yourself the biggest favor you can and adopt a shelter pet. Before long, it will be hard to imagine life without them.
