Some may have thought after losing so many skilled players to graduation the Grand Junction High School Tigers would be in re-building mode. After winning the first two games of the season, head coach Robbie Owens has a good looking group of young men in the black and orange this season.

This season Coach Owens is going with a two QB system. Tyler Heinsma and John Wiman have been sharing time under center, and so far it’s working out. The Tigers have thrown for almost 300 yards and 3 TD’s with only 1 INT. Both Heinsma and Wiman along with RB Austin Lewis have put up 428 rushing yards and 4 TD’s. When you add the receiving of Jack Parsons, Kaleb Johnson and Matt King, 296 yards and 3 TD’s, the Tiger offence looks ready to roll.

Defensibly the Tigers have a quick group that really gets after the ball. Last week the Tigers gave up the ball 6 times, were shut-out in the first half and only gave up 17 points. Now, Coach Owens will tell you they can’t do that each week but it must be nice to have a group of guys who can keep his team in games when the offence isn’t clicking. The Tigers did pull out the win with just 25 ticks left on the clock.

They have only played two games this season, but yes, I think the Tigers can make a playoff run.

Come see for yourself this week as the Tigers host the Lobos of Rocky Mountain High school. The Lobos will bring a quick team that should be a good test for the Tigers. If you can’t make it out for the game you can catch all the action starting at 6:30pm under the Friday Night Lights on 95 Rock.
