At first glance, a $100 bill like the one featured looks real. So much so that people have been able to pass them as real US currency in and around Grand Junction. The bills are not real but very well designed counterfeits.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office has had six different cases involving this counterfeit money. They are asking businesses and anyone else who carries and uses cash to know how to tell the money is fake.

If you look at all the pictures of the various denominations they all have one thing in common, they are stamped with words and letters that are not English. The counterfeit bills may be stamped in Asian, German, Turkish or another language.

The Sheriff's Office says if you see one of these bills, do not accept it as payment. If you have one of the counterfeit bills call the Mesa County Sheriff's Office at 970-244-3500.
