Beck Is Finally Ready to Release ‘Colors,’ Calls the Experimental Pop Album ‘Quite an Undertaking’

Beck was already two years into work on Colors when the Grammy award presentation for its predecessor Morning Phase was famously interrupted by Kanye West.

Now, the follow up is finally due for release. “I suppose the record could have come out a year or two ago, but these are complex songs all trying to do two or three things at once,” Beck told Rolling Stone. “It’s not retro and not modern. To get everything to sit together so it doesn’t sound like a huge mess was quite an undertaking.”

The title and a release date of Oct. 13 were previously leaked. Rolling Stone now confirms Colors will arrive in October.

Beck collaborated with Greg Kurstin on the new album, which he describes as experimental pop. Kurstin was keyboardist on Beck’s Sea Change tour in 2002, and has also produced albums for Adele, Kelly Clarkson and, more recently, Foo Fighters.

They worked in Kurstin’s home studio, playing all of the instruments themselves. In some cases, that efficiency was needed since Kurstin’s busy schedule meant working with several artists at once. Beck said the results are far more upbeat than the often-melancholy Morning Phase, owing to his current marital bliss.

“The best songs make you glad to be alive,” Beck added. “It doesn’t matter if it’s Beethoven or the Monkees. That’s what I was thinking about a lot.”
