The Colorado Avalanche take Nathan Mackinnon with the first pick over all in the NHL draft. The Avalanche had said they preferred Mackinnon over Seth Jones for the last two weeks and they stuck to their guns. The Avalanche, who won the NHL's Draft lottery to leapfrogFloridafor the first pick, said they like Jones, but felt the team's need was greater at forward.

MacKinnon helped lead the Mooseheads to a Memorial Cup title this past season, leading the tournament with 13 points, scoring seven goals including a hat trick in the championship game, and was chosen as tournament MVP. He also scored 32 goals and 75 points during the regular season forHalifax.

This is a good pick for the Avalanche. Mackinnon will give the Avalanche a surplus of wingers which means they can play all of them and improve their offense or trade one to pick up a blueliner.
