From the dawn of time artists have been stealing material from each other. So did it come as a surprise when the story broke that Led Zeppelin was being sued over the music in ‘Stairway to Heaven’? It isn’t the first time Zeppelin has been sued and I’m sure it won’t be the last.

Once a caveman came up with a cool groove around the campfire another tribe would steal it once they heard it. That is just the way it is people seem to like the same stuff. That doesn’t mean people shouldn’t have copyrights but I don’t think that will keep people from stealing parts of songs.

Maybe the real problem is that all of the cool riffs have been written and used? Maybe what looks like an endless number of possibilities really isn’t. I have talked to a few musicians and they pretty much say the same thing. With all the songs that have been written at some point people will start stepping on each other.

So when you hear that killer new track just remember that somebody  wrote that riff 30-years-ago in a bar one Saturday night.
