If you remember buying a Halloween costume in a box for less than $5, you know all about bad Halloween costumes. Maybe you were creative enough to make  your own.

My memories of Halloween include a boxed devil costume consisting of a silk-like smock and a plastic mask. Ironic that, as a preacher's kid, my parents would allow me to go out dressed up as our arch enemy the devil.

The fact is, the costumes of the 70s and 80s were cheap, and you could usually get a couple years worth of use out of them, depending on the timing of your growth spurts.

It seems like to me that more kids today make their own costumes than those in the 70s and 80s, but I don't know for sure it that is really a fact.

I can see various reasons  for making your own costume.

One good reason for making your own costume - especially back in the day - is because those boxed costumes were just so cheesy! Just take a look at the costumes in this television commercial advertising costumes of the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman.

Cutting costs would be another good reason for doing your own thing, as costumes today at places like Party City.com can run anywhere from $25 to $50 and even more. Buying a little makeup and accessories can definitely reduce your Halloween budget. You can easily get a makeup kit for less than $15.

Another thing is that it seems like more and more kids today are going maskless, utilizing makeup and other aspects of the costume to give the desired effect.

So the question is, are kids today (or their parents) making their own costumes more than they used to, and for those that do, what is the primary reason. Take our polls below and let us know what you think.
