Tragedy struck in June 2016 when Capt. Jeff Kuss was killed while preparing for an air show performance near Nashville. Signs have been put up along Highway 3 near his hometown as a memorial.

He was among America's best. The Blue Angel pilot was lost when his fighter jet was traveling too fast and he lost control. Weather and fatigue are said to have been contributing factors.

State lawmakers passed a resolution naming the stretch of highway near his hometown of Durango as a permanent memorial of his service and bravery. Workers recently installed the signs along the highway, which once served as the main access road to the city.

As we approach this Memorial Day weekend it should serve as a reminder we must always be thankful for the brave men and woman that serve in our armed forces. A special "thank you" to them and their families.
